End caps seal the two ends of the pleated filter media, ensuring that fluid can only pass through the media and cannot bypass from the ends (bypass leakage). The bonding between end cap and media is the most easily overlooked yet most critical step of a filter — if an end cap leaks, the entire filter's filtration is rendered useless.
I. Three end cap material types¶
[Industry Knowledge]
| End cap material | Application | Bonding method |
|---|---|---|
| PU polyurethane | Frame and end sealing of panel air filters hy-af-*, cabin filters hy-cf-* |
Glue-injection foaming, forming the frame seal simultaneously |
| Steel end cap | Spin-on oil filters hy-of-spinon, round air filters hy-af-round, spin-on fuel filters hy-ff-spinon |
Glue injected inside the cap, media ends pressed in |
| Thermoset plastisol / plastic | Long-life oil filters hy-of-longlife, cartridge oil filters hy-of-cartridge, in-line fuel filters hy-ff-inline |
Plastisol thermosetting, or hot-melt / ultrasonic welding |
II. PU end cap bonding (air / cabin filters)¶
[Industry Knowledge] PU is the most mainstream end-seal and frame solution for air and cabin filters. The process is: place the pleated element into a mold, inject liquid PU (two-component or one-component) into the periphery and ends, and after foaming and curing it forms a frame + end cap + seal three-in-one.
- Advantages: one-piece forming, good sealing (PU's own elasticity conforms to the housing), vibration-resistant, no separate seal ring needed.
- Key controls: glue injection volume, foam density, demold time. Under-foaming → air holes in the sealing surface cause leakage; over-foaming → out-of-tolerance dimensions that won't fit the housing.
- This site's correspondence: the end caps of
hy-af-nano/hy-af-panelare all PU, with "PU foam gasket" sealing;hy-cf-*likewise.
III. Steel end cap + plastisol (oil filters)¶
[Industry Knowledge] The spin-on oil filter's element is "center tube + pleated media + upper/lower steel end caps." The steel end cap has a hole in the center (lower cap) for oil inflow, and the other end is closed (upper cap). Process:
- Pleat and wind the media, insert the center tube;
- Coat the inner walls of the upper/lower steel end caps with thermoset plastisol or special element adhesive;
- Press the two ends of the media into the end cap grooves;
- Pass through a curing oven, where the plastisol cures at 150–200 ℃, firmly sealing the media ends inside the caps.
[Editorial Opinion] End cap adhesive is the easiest place to cut corners: inferior products use room-temperature adhesive or insufficient adhesive; after curing the media ends loosen, and oil short-circuits directly through the ends — equal to oil returning to the circuit unfiltered. To judge whether end cap bonding is qualified, look at "static burst + end-peel" tests, not just appearance.
IV. Curing oven¶
[Industry Knowledge] End cap / plastisol curing uses a tunnel curing oven: elements pass continuously on a conveyor chain through a zone-temperature-controlled oven body, where the adhesive completes crosslinking under a set temperature profile. The key controls are the temperature profile (ramp-up → hold → ramp-down) and in-oven residence time; under-curing → insufficient bond strength, over-curing → media/adhesive embrittlement.
V. Quality judgment of end cap bonding¶
[Industry Knowledge]
- End peel strength: pull the end cap and media apart and observe the failure mode of the bond surface — the ideal is media-body tearing (cohesive failure), not clean separation of the adhesive surface (adhesive failure).
- Leak-tightness / bypass rate: finished products undergo 100% leak testing; leakage means the end or sealing surface has failed.
- Oil / temperature resistance: end cap adhesive must withstand oil/fuel and -40 ~ +150 ℃ cycling without debonding.
